What is Propalin for dogs?
Propalin is a colourless, slightly viscous solution containing the drug phenylpropanolamine. It comes in a plastic bottle with a graduated syringe which can be used to draw up the correct dose. Once a bottle has been opened, it should be used up or discarded in 3 months. Bottle sizes available are Propalin 30ml and Proplain 100ml.Why is Propalin needed?
Some bitches will start to leak a little urine, normally only when they are asleep or very relaxed, after they have been spayed. Most spayed bitches do not develop this problem, but some do. It happens more commonly in large breeds with docked tails, such as Dobermans and Boxers, and certain other, non-docked breeds, including setters. This condition can develop fairly soon after spaying, or sometimes only years later. Exactly why it happens is not completely clear, but it is partly due to the changed hormone levels, and partly due to direct effects of abdominal surgery. Incontinence can occur for other reasons and Proplin is often less effective when used in entire bitches or in male dogs. Propalin should initially be given 3 times daily , at a dose of 0.1ml per 5kg bodyweight. Propalin only lasts a few hours in the body, which is why it needs to be given 3 times daily. However, once the leaking is under control, many dog owners find gradually reducing the frequency and the dose will not be a problem. Long-term management is sometimes achieved with a reduced amount given just once daily. As long as the maximum dose is not exceeded at any one time, it is safe to see if a lesser amount still works. Propalin is not absorbed well if there is a lot of food in the stomach at the same time. For it to work well, it is best given on an empty stomach with just a very small amount of food. How does Propalin work?
Propalin acts to tighten the muscles of the urethra where it leaves the bladder. It does this through acting on receptors which respond to stimulation from the sympathetic nervous system. What are the Propalin side effects?
The most common side effect is a slight increase in aggression. This is not noticed at all in most dogs, but individuals which are known to be potentially "snappy" can become a bit worse. For these dogs, it is better to use an alternative type of treatment based on low dose oestrogen supplementation.Other side effects from Propalin tend to be as might be expected from sympathetic stimulation. An increased heart rate and blood pressure can occur, so Propalin should be used with caution in dogs with heart conditions. Dizziness and restlessness are occasionally seen. All these side effects soon disappear if the medication is withdrawn. Generally Propalin is found to be very safe
